Historical Background
The advent of the Industrial Revolution in Europe (between 1750 and 1850) brought with it tremendous changes in the socio-economic foundations of many nations. Driven by rapid growth and new production technologies, many European manufacturers saw the need to publicize their machine-produced goods to a wider audience. This need gave rise to the idea of trade fairs which were the precursors of international exhibitions.
The first recognized ‘universal exhibition’ was organized in London, England, by the English Society of Arts in 1851 in response to a royal commission. The overwhelming success of this event was instrumental in sparking subsequent world-class exhibitions up to the present day. Following the tradition of ‘bigger and better,’ China, the host country for the upcoming World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, has set its sights on creating the largest show ever, one that will boast the highest number of exhibitors as well as the largest public attendance.
